“What you do makes a difference,
and you have to decide what kind of
difference you want to make”
This quote from the respected Jane Goodall begs a broader inquisition into how we each determine to live our lives. One businessman has decided to do just that and spend a day volunteering at Nexus Care’s Fresh Start Food Program.
We sat down with Eric Brizuela, a successful small business owner to understand what it was that made him give up a day in the corporate sector:
Q: You actually took leave from your job to volunteer, why?
A: We’ve been great fans and supporters of Nexus Care for many years and I wanted to experience it myself; get more hands-on with the programs and the work that they do.
Q: What surprised you?
A: Wow, yes. I was quite surprised at the high level of professionalism and quality of systems, processes and infrastructure that was working so well already. I could see how necessary costly things like cold storage is.
“I remember noticing that people were genuinely shocked at the quality - and quantity! - of food they received. It was amazing to see the Nexus Care team spend time and listen if a client started opening up about what they’re going through. ”
Q: What advice would you give to other professionals that might be interested in supporting a local charity?
A: Find a local community organisation that aligns with your heart and just do it. Every business owner can actually make a tremendous impact on the front line of helping people and towards the future of our society!
